Perhaps the most transformative figure in British fashion, Vivienne Westwood pioneered the punk style—a provocative and enduring visual vocabulary whose legacy continues to influence fashion, graphic design, music, and political communication. Legacies in the high-fashion space traditionally emphasize formality, heritage, and institution. Distinct from her peers, Westwood’s designs explicitly opposed the fashion establishment, ultimately creating a subculture so revolutionary that the fashion industry celebrated it. In a landscape where young consumers are keen on brand values and see consumption as a form of activism, Westwood’s visual language of subversion and dissent is perhaps the only equipped in the high-fashion sphere to engage with today’s discourse justly. Conversely, many young consumers are unaware of this vast history and influence. Where brands like Burberry and Chanel have interactive online experiences summarizing their histories, Westwood does not. An interactive digital experience that internalized Westwood’s visual philosophy presented itself as a distinct opportunity to engage the Y2K generation in a format analogous to what they grew up on.
The digital experience reimagines the contemporary “what’s in my bag” trope as a recognizable vehicle to educate viewers on Westwood’s legacy. Hovering over the items reveals information regarding the period, significance, or impact associated with them. Its non-linear, overlapping structure forces users to move and engage with the items. Reflecting Westwood’s ethos of challenging unidirectional consumption and information, the interaction design inherits the disruptive, DIY nature of punk culture.

The interface integrates the practical uses of Westwood accessories to denote digital functionalities. The Mini Bas Relief Bobby, for instance, indicates elements whose positions are fixed on the page. The stylized cursor is a mouse pendant from a vintage Westwood necklace.

The culmination of visual, ideological, and historical considerations is a modern digital experience that redirects Gen Z nostalgia to an era that is both before their time and also quintessentially current—maintaining brand equity and Westwood loyalists while ushering in the new generation of consumers within their own narrative.
